How to create your own Unique Style

Standing out in a crowd, in a good way, is part of being a unique and interesting looking person.
You can follow current fashion trends by scanning the pages of fashion magazines and watching celebrities on television, but do you really want to look like an imitation of someone else?  Learning how to dress for your own personal style is easier than you think.  It just takes a little bit of creativity and effort to find what looks best and works best for you.

        Step One:
Get inspired by an icon from the past instead of following the trends of today's celebrities. James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Debbie Twiggy all changed fashion with their signature looks; find a style from yesterday that you identify with and draw inspiration from the icon that made it their own.  This isn’t to say you should copy that person’s look, just draw inspiration from it and tweak it to your own personal style and taste.
You can also get inspiration from different eras and places.  Do you love everything French?  Look at beautiful images that exude that Parisian feeling.  For example, crowns, bees, vintage roses, the Eiffel tower, chandeliers, brooches, etc.  Do you love some of the older vintage looks?  Think about vintage slips, jewelry, hats, shoes, etc.  Use your imagination.  Google images are a great place to get ideas from.  Just type in the particular word or theme that you have in mind, there are literally hundreds of ways to personalize your own unique style.

Step Two:
Mix different decades together.  If you like shoes from the 1940s and the bold geometric print mini dresses that were all the rage in the 1960s, then pair them together in your own unique style.  Don’t be afraid to try new ways of mixing classics, vintage and modern.  It looks better to mix decades rather than looking like you just stepped out of a different era completely.

Step Three:
Choose a signature piece of clothing or an accessory that you really love and build your outfit around it.   It can be a favorite belt, hat, a great pair of shoes or a great little dress-something that defines your style will make every outfit uniquely you.

 Step Four:
Find fashion everywhere. Don’t just think about fashion being exclusively limited to boutiques or malls.  You can find beautiful and truly unique items in vintage or second hand stores.  Do you have access to some of your grandmothers forgotten about treasures?  This can be a great source for finding that really unique and awesome purse, hat, brooch, ring, etc.  A great website for vintage items is www.etsy.com.   Just go under the vintage tab and you can find some really wonderful items there, many at very affordable prices. Putting together your look from a variety of different sources will allow you to create a style that is all your own.

                                                             Step Five:
Adopt your unique style and be proud of it.  Nothing is more attractive on a person than self confidence!  Remember that you're expressing your individuality and dressing in a way that expresses who you are.   Pretty soon others maybe drawing on you for inspiration!  Expressing who you are, now that's a beauty that is timeless.
